Gazzard defends Hill Climb title
Posted on November 9, 2009, 12:12pm
The 2009 edition of the Pirtek Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb provided plenty of high-paced action and no shortage of drama.
Mount Gambier’s Peter Gazzard successfully defended his title as the fastest driver up the hill, fending off the close challenge of former dual champion Kevin Mackrell of Traralgon.
Gazzard produced a new personal time of 52.389 seconds, eclipsing the previous race record of 52.51 set in 2007 by Mackrell.
Mackrell’s best time at the weekend was 53.360 seconds.
Gazzard and Mackrell have run the quinella in each of the four years of the “Legend” and with the scores now locked at two wins each, have set the scene for an exciting showdown next year.
Third was Sean Day in a 1990 Subaru STI, stopping the clock at 53.60 seconds.

Each year this event gets better. All the volunteer hours that go into the organizing and setting up during the months leading up to the weekend is phenomninal. The Valley Lake truly starts to take shape in the week prior when it’s all hands on deck. SEAC (South Eastern Automobile Club) members and friends take leave from work and thier lives to get everything into position. The Director this year, Morrie Mashado, has to be congratulated for how smoothly the setup, the event and the dismantling went. I am proud to be a member of such a forward thinking and proactive club. As the Pit Marshall I spoke to many drivers during the weekend and continually recieved praise for such a well organized event and to be in such beautiful surroundings. Is it any wonder the entries fill within 12 days of opening!!!!
I must say I was proud to contribute to the running of the 2009 Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb this year and for the past three years. I could honestly say this is one of the most professionally run Motoring (Motorsport) clubs in Australia today. Bring on many more successful Hillclimbs in this great city to show all others how it should be done.
