The future of the lifeboat used in the rescue of survivors from the famed Admella wreck off the Carpenter Rocks coast appears secure.
Glenelg Shire Council has received a Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme (MMAPSS) grant to fund preparation of a report for conservation and preservation of the Portland lifeboat (pictured).
The $4800 grant will enable council to engage a conservator to produce a definitive report on the vessel, to be used as a guide for any future work on the icon.
As the centrepiece of Portland’s Maritime Discovery Centre, the vessel has been the focus of national attention in recent times.
In September last year, the 150th anniversary of construction of the lifeboat was marked and early in 2009 it was listed on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels.
The role of the Portland lifeboat following the South Australian shipwreck was also recognised during the recent Admella 150 Festival.
Glenelg Shire Council has received MMAPSS funding for the lifeboat on two previous occasions in the late 1990s to establish the display at the maritime centre.
“Given that the lifeboat saw 55 years of active service, then sat in Portland’s botanical gardens for 70 years, it was still a remarkable condition when initial works were undertaken to prepare it for display in the Maritime Discovery Centre,” Glenelg Shire cultural collection officer Trevor Smith said.
“The resultant report from this project will guide council in undertaking any future work on the vessel, ensuring that this significant piece of Australia’s maritime history is preserved for generations to come.”

Another Report to go with the considerable acquired and documented knowledge about the lifeboat is a joke.
The money would be better allocated to doing the conservation work that has previously been identified as beneficial to the ongoing preservation of the boat.
