South bowlers skittle West

Premier bowlers David Somerfield and Richard Crute helped lead South Gambier to victory over West in XXXX Gold Barber Shield cricket on Saturday.

This was one of two rescheduled 80 over matches completed at the weekend.

The other saw Mil Lel claim its first big scalp of the season by gaining first innings points over East Gambier by 72 runs, but fall three wickets short of a memorable outright.

South 157 d West 115

West went into day two on 2/27 (Paul Harding and captain Jason Hann dismissed) and needed an early partnership to steady the innings.

This didn’t happen as West lost two quick wickets to be 4/37 before David Howell tried to produce an individual rescue effort.

Howell top scored with 33 and Robbie Drenthen at number nine was 21 not out, but unfortunately for West no other batsman reached double figures on a disappointing day for the side.

Batting for long periods was a problem for West last season and was the difference between making and missing out on the top four.

This season had started better for the side, but on Saturday after just 38 overs the Roos had been bowled out for 115.

Richard Crute was the pick of the South bowlers with 3/11 off 11 overs, Somerfield claimed 3/36 off 16.5 overs and Kieran Ashby finished with 2/30 off 14 overs.

To finish out the day South returned to the crease and at the end of the day were 7/89.

Ashby was 33 not out and Harry Gill reached 31.

The West bowling was led by Shane Dycer, who claimed three scalps and Bray Stephenson took two wickets.

Mil Lel 126 and 127 d East 54 and 7/123

Mil Lel went into the second day of this match in the box seat with a good lead, but nothing could be taken for granted as East was desperate to try and get back into the match after an embarrassing batting performance last Sunday.

Mil Lel was 2/78 when the first ball was bowled and East did well to restrict the side to 127.

Mil Lel would have liked more runs, but its lead was 199.

Todd Carpenter scored 24 and Simon Walters, who was a day two replacement for Nick Blachut, took their combined score to 23.

East had 52 overs to chase an outright victory or limit Mil Lel to first innings points.

East skipper Simon Golebiowski had another good day with the ball to capture five wickets, which took his match total to 13.

Scott Allen also returned to form with 3/55 from 21 overs.

East never really looked like gaining an outright win and ended the match 7/123.

After just 23 overs the side had slumped to 5/45, but some top work from Dan Stratford (49), Golebiowski and Tom O’Connor (22 not out) helped deny Mil Lel the outright win.

Hudson was the pick of the Mil Lel bowlers with figures of 4/24 off 10 overs.
