Two public pay phones face removal

Posted on November 11, 2009, 10:10am

Mount Gambier city councillors have expressed their disappointment over Telstra’s plan to remove two public pay phones in the city.

Pay phones on Lake Terrace East (near Lennons Deli) and Shepherdson Road (near shops) have been stickered so the public is aware this infrastructure will be removed.

Cr Tony Pasin expressed his disappointment with the move.

“Telstra would see no pay phones in Mount Gambier if they had their way,” Cr Pasin said.

Cr Maher said these phones were used by the public and should stay.

But the councillor said he had “no faith” Telstra would change its mind if council lobbied the communications giant.

Meanwhile, operational services director Daryl Sexton said council had previously lobbied Telstra about removing public pay phones.

“We have spent a lot of time on this and got nowhere,” Mr Sexton said.

Its little wonder that Telstra is removing these Pay Phones from around the Mount Gambier area. I have one of these phones right outside the front of our house just metres from our Bedroom window. On countless Saturday nights there are drunken people frequenting the phone at any hour during the night quite often between 12 midnight and 3AM. The people using the phone quite often are loud and use very offensive language that we hear quite clearly with the windows shut. On numerous occasions the phone is vandalised with broken windows on the booth itself and the phone is often spray painted or has some other vandalous act committed against it. I have reported each and every offence to local police only to be met with “You want us to come out to vandalised phone. Are You serious?”. I have even complained to Telstra about this and all they say is “They cant control how their customers behave while using the phone”. I have even had cases where I have been abused while mowing the lawn cause someone has come along and wants me to stop mowing while they use the phone. Quite frankly if the phone was to remove it I would be one very happy Local Resident. So come on Telstra DO IT and DO IT NOW.

Local Resident — Telstra has a really great track record on rural services. Hope rural residents start getting tax breaks for all the services we’re missing out on!

Local resident would be worth while to simply cut the hand piece off. Everytime they replace it, do it again. Eventually they will remove the whole phone.

In regards to the article, Telstra is big on charging the earth for sub-standard services and it comes as no suprise to me that they would want to do this.

    Shame shame shame!!!
