Mount Gambier High School’s Year 8/9 baseball squad recently travelled to Adelaide where it won the South Australian state championship, defeating Seaton High School.

Mount Gambier is the first country high school to win the statewide knockout title since it began in 1987 which is a huge compliment for the team.

After comprehensive victories against Tenison Woods College and Grant High School in the local competition, the successful team defeated Marryatville High School 8 – 0 in the semi-final, thus enabling it a berth in the final.

Strong batting by Jordan Sturges, Craig Nicholls and Sam Shepherd assisted the team to compile runs in every innings in an entertaining and tightly contested match.

The pitching team of Sturges and Joel Ransom, supported by good catching from Shepherd dominated and kept Mount Gambier in control.

The Mount Gambier batters found it more difficult to get on base but remained focused and with a determined approach were able to score due to great base running.

Tight fielding prevented Seaton from scoring when its runners made it to base enabling Mount Gambier to win 8 – 0.

Coach Penne Saffin congratulated his team for their focus, sportsmanship and ability.

“Their determination was echoed by the organisers of the event, the umpires and Peter Gee, the Seaton coach.

“All matches were played in a positive, determined manner and this was reflected in the final result.”
