Triathletes face iron man challenge

Five Mount Gambier triathletes will push themselves to the limit in this Sunday’s fourth annual Shepparton Half Iron Man.

Danny Habets, Toby Richardson and Craig Dunn will compete in the individual category while Richard Wood and Penny Thomas are both entered in the teams event.

The Kialla Lakes area is the venue for the half iron man and will test the stamina and mental strength of each competitor.

The event consists of three disciplines, a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21.1km run.

Richardson will compete in the 25 – 29 year age group, Habets in the 30 – 35 and Dunn in the 35 – 40.

Wood and Thomas, competing as a mixed team, will — sort of — share the legs of the race.

While Wood is taking on the bike ride, Thomas will kick start the team in water before returning for the closing run leg.

Each of the quintet have set their own goals for the event with Richardson hoping to qualify for the Iron Man Australia championship in Port Macquarie (NSW) next year. To do so, he will have to finish Sunday’s race.

He is also hoping for a personal best time, after finishing 100th in last year’s Shepparton event in a time of 4 hours 40.09 minutes.

Habets meanwhile said he would be “stoked” if he could break five hours.

Thomas is using Sunday’s race as training for the international half iron man event in Geelong next year where she hopes to compete in the individual category.

“My goal is to finish,” she said.
