Firemen rake in cash booty

The South East Metropolitan Fire Service gathered $1974.50 in booty when the firefighters struck Mount Gambier’s pubs on Friday night, filling their giant money boxes with donations for the region’s Angel Flight charity.
MFS regional manager George Rodis said the annual “Shake a Boot” event was a resounding success — not one boot-shaped collection box went untouched.
The 15 firies involved split up into two groups and, each starting from opposite ends of Commercial Street, they tackled every pub in sight then met up in the middle.
Mr Rodis said his officers had done well, but generous patrons deserved gratitude.
“This has just reinforced that when you fundraise for a community cause, people get pretty generous,” he said.
“This was a terrific effort by the Limestone Coast — and the Australian Professional Firefighters Foundation has stepped up to make the figure a round $2000.”
A cheque will be presented to the South East Angel Flight organisation in coming weeks, to help people with medical conditions attend appointments and treatment in the city.
