Head-on collision investigated

Investigations will continue into Monday night’s head-on smash on the Portland-Nelson Road that saw two men trapped in their vehicles for more than an hour-and-a-half.
A Portland resident, 33, was flown by ambulance helicopter to the Warrnambool Base Hospital with lower leg injuries and a 61-year-old Mount Gambier man was taken to the Mount Gambier Hospital, also with lower leg injuries.
State Emergency Service volunteers helped cut the victims from the wreckage.
Sgt Daniel Lehman, of Portland police, said the two Holden Commodores collided near the front driver’s side corner just west of Mount Richmond about 6.20pm.
“There is no suggestion either driver was exceeding the speed limit, however, we believe fatigue was a factor,” Sgt Lehman said, but it remained unclear which car had entered the wrong lane of the road.
“It was a lot more than a sideswipe, but not an absolute head on.”
He said the wreckage was spread over about 100 metres, one car having travelled 60 metres from the point of impact.
“Although they sustained leg injuries, both men were lucky it wasn’t worse,” Sgt Lehman said.
“This incident is a timely reminder of the impact fatigue can have on drivers.”
