Mount Gambier’s Rhianna Peate is quickly developing into a frontline cricketer at national level.

The tearaway fast bowler started her first class career against the ACT Meteors last month in the Women’s National Cricket League, collecting the wicket of all rounder Charlotte Anneveld in her first spell at the Manuka Oval.

Peate finished with a highly credible 1/20 from five overs in a high scoring match where the South Australian Scorpions won by 34 runs.

Still in the embryonic stages, Peate has played each of the four 50-over and two Twenty/20 matches the Scorpions have played this summer.

Her best effort was 2/34 from eight overs in the oppressive heat against St Peter’s College against Western Australia on November 15 claiming the wickets of Australian player Lauren Esbray and top order bat, the WA Fury captain Peta Merrilees, both leg before wicket.

In other WCNL games, Peate has taken the wickets of Australian Test player Kris Britt (ACT) and Donna Brown (WA Fury).

She has also been selected for the Women’s Cricket Australia Cup, which starts in Sydney today and runs till next Tuesday.

“She is very talented and a natural athlete,” her coach at the Cricket Australia Cup, Andrea McCauley said.

“My understanding is she has come on in leaps and bounds in the last 12 months.

“From representing SA at under 17 level to now be getting Australian players out at National League level, she is a fiery fast bowler on the field but pretty quiet off, but I’m sure that will change.”
