Thieves and vandals hit construction site

Renovations and extensions to the Lake Terrace Boandik Lodge aged care facility are being jeopardised by unknown, “well prepared” miscreants, who have taken to stealing anything that has not been bolted down at the Dycer Constructions site on Downer Road.

Police have intensified their hunt for the culprits, following vandalism that included $3000 damage to wiring at the half-finished premises overnight on Tuesday.

Dycer Constructions administrator Cath Dycer yesterday told The Border Watch this was the site’s fourth break-in over five months that had resulted in damage or theft.

Ms Dycer said the thieves had first struck in July and, despite an unsuccessful first attempt at breaking open the site container, they had since broken into a toolbox, stealing copper and tools to the value of $1500.

They also took a cement mixer that was being used for on-site masonry work — “not the easiest thing to move”, she said — and earlier this month they made off with an oxy set.

“It looks like Tuesday night’s escapade included the person or people cutting the main switchboard wiring inside the building that is currently under construction,” Ms Dycer said.

“It’s really disappointing such acts can be done to an aged care facility, it’s really low.”

According to Ms Dycer, there was a night security patrol that drove past the site a random intervals, but nobody had seen anything suspicious.

“We will be increasing security starting now,” she said.

“It’s a shame we have to go this far, but the break-ins can’t be allowed to continue, particularly with regard to the safety of Boandik Lodge residents.”

Mount Gambier police have asked anyone with information on the incidents or the whereabouts of the missing equipment to contact the station on 8735 1020.
