Former Stawell Gift champion Adrian Mott will be the headline act at tomorrow’s ninth annual Mount Gambier RSL Classic Carnival at Vansittart Park.
Mott of the inner Melbourne suburb of Essendon, won the 2006 Stawell Gift as a 20-year-old running from 7.25m and stopping the clock 11.98 seconds.
Trained at the time by another Stawell Gift winner, Steve Brimacombe, Mott will be the backmarker at tomorrow’s carnival, chasing the lucrative $10,000 120m Classic.
Mott will run from the tough mark of 3m and will be trying to better his previous two appearances at the Mount Gambier Carnival.
His previous performances include:
2006 — Raced off 3.25m. Third in heat in 12.240 seconds; second in semi in 12.236 and third in final in 12.233.
2007 — Raced off 3m. Third in heat in 12.562 and fourth in semi in 12.563.
Mott is a former sprint fitness coach with the Richmond Football Club in the AFL and with Sheffield Shield cricket team, the Victorian Bushrangers.
But while Mott carries star status tomorrow, there will be no shortage of runners, with just as impeccable qualifications from the 52 entries for the 120m Classic.
Mott will take on a highly talented list of athletes in the second richest race on the SA Athletic League calendar, which is now ranked second only to the Bay Sheffield in late December.
Recent winner of the 120m Whyalla Gift, Dylan Hicks will be aiming to keep his good form going and from 8.75m must be rated highly.
