Members of Mount Gambier five-piece Admella rushed from work to the Shadows stage last Friday night to perform a solid half hour set and take out the top band award at the city’s annual Battle of the Bands.
The new wave hardcore metal band, featuring 22 year old vocalist Jacob Bradley, 17 year olds Tom Wilson on guitar and Nathan Wilson on bass, 19 year old Gavin Robertson on guitar and 28 year old drummer Steve Davis, won a PA system from Dale Cleves Yamaha for their efforts.
With shows coming up in Warrnambool next month and Mount Gambier’s The Old Jail in January, the win marks a leap forward for the band as they prepare to step up activity on the heavy music scene.
The band also secured the opportunity to perform at Mount Gambier’s community New Years Eve celebrations, which will feature a huge line-up of South East artists performing to mark the end of 2009.
Other winners on Friday night included best guitarist Jason Bannister, 21, of Despair to Glory and keyboardist and vocalist Chelsea-Marie Turner, 18, of Queen Akini, while guitarist Jackson Ahern, 15, of No Heroes Here, took out the James Kennedy Encouragement Award.
Neck Deep dominated other awards, with vocalist Charlie “Chas” Matthews, 31, bassist Dan Edwards, 19, and drummer Levi Day, 20, taking out their categories.
The band also ranked second overall, followed by third place-getter Burning Alaska.
Event coordinator Matt Wall of 5GTR FM said only a few points separated the top bands.
“Admella played last — the other bands were great, but they were so tight and together that they stood out and the judges saw what they were doing right,” he said.
Mr Wall said reasonable audience numbers attended the competition after the event was moved to Friday night this year, away from an all-ages Sunday competition.
“It was good to see support for it, but it would be great to see the place packed,” he said.
“Hopefully we can attract a greater diversity of bands next year and get more numbers, which might allow us to have genre awards and maybe even separate events for all-ages and over 18s.”
Mr Wall said he would seek funding to expand the event and was thankful for the support of the competitions many sponsors, without which the initiative could not continue.
