GP recruitment success

A project launched three years ago to attract more GPs to the Limestone Coast has been hailed a success.
In January 2006, when the “Recruit and Retain a Doc” project was launched, there was one GP in the region for every 1237 residents, but by July this year the ratio had reduced to one GP for every 1062 residents.
According to a final report on the project, “Recruit and Retain a Doc project has made an important contribution to the recruitment of GPs into the region,” and has achieved 98.9pc of its target.
The project, a collaborative effort between the Limestone Coast Division of General Practice (LCDGP) and SELGA, involved a marketing plan, the development of a website to promote the local job market internationally, and a variety of marketing tools, including DVDs and brochures.
When the program began, only two GP practices in the Limestone Coast had a website, which limited promotional opportunities within Australia and overseas.
The website www.limestonecoastGP.com.au was launched in 2007 to include practice profiles for all practices together with information about real estate, schools, tourism and local councils, with links to better assist potential GPs when researching the Limestone Coast.
It has since been found to be an effective promotional tool to market practices and the region.
According to the final report, the website had 3904 hits in September 2007 and this had since increased to 9213 hits in June this year.
Visitors to the website have been from all over the world, including Italy, France, Austria, Hungary, Poland, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
