The supply of Coonawarra wines for an Australia Day function at The Vatican next year is expected to boost sales from the region, according to Australia’s Ambassador to the Holy See, former deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer.
“It is a delight to choose Penola and the Coonawarra wine region as the first rotating feature town and region for Australia Day in Rome,” Mr Fischer said to The Border Watch yesterday.
“This will be the first ever Australia Day function by the Holy See Australian Embassy and given all expectations about Blessed Mary MacKillop and her role, it is timely and terrific two local wine estates have stepped forward.”
Mr Fischer returned to Australia late last week and visited the South Australian Tourism Commission to meet with Limestone Coast Tourism and winemakers supplying beverages for the embassy’s Australia Day function celebrating the wine region and its connection with Mary MacKillop.
DiGiorgio Family Wines and Zema Estate, both of which have connections to Italy, are sending wine to Rome.
“I have tasted the wines and they are fabulous wines that will make a big impression in certain key networks in Rome, which will definitely lead to follow-up orders, which is a bonus,” Mr Fischer said.
“The Italians will be greatly impressed by the reds that await them from that beautiful red soil of Coonawarra — it will be a late afternoon/early evening function in the cold Rome wintertime, so good-bodied reds will go down well.”
Mr Fischer said he appreciated the support of the tourism bodies and wineries, with expectations wine was now en-route to Rome for the function, which was expected to attract more than 100 people on the bank of the Tiber River, near St Peter’s Basilica.
