Donovans will be included in a bus trial that has involved a Portland to Mount Gambier service stopping in Nelson.

A recent review of the service, which runs on Mondays and Fridays, resulted in inclusion of Donovans for the remainder of the trial period.

South West Transport Connections and the Transport Department met Nelson residents in September to discuss how the service could be made more convenient for users.

“Feedback from the community is needed to tailor the service to the needs of the local users,” South West Transport Connections coordinator Becky Morton said.

Ms Morton said there were usually three to four passengers from Nelson on the bus and it was also used occasionally by backpackers and walkers on the Great South West Walk.

Residents at the recent meeting backed a survey that showed 50pc of Donovans residents had indicated they would like to see the service expanded to their town.

An application to the Transport Department to vary the service provided by local company Portland Transit was successful and the new route began at the end of November.

The service is funded through the state government’s Transport Connections program until June 2010.

Grant District Council chief executive Russell Peate has welcomed the bus service expansion.

“From council’s point of view it’s fantastic there’s a public transport service from Donovans to Mount Gambier,” he said.

“I hope the community uses the service so that funding continues to be provided.”

Another review of the service will take place before the end of the trial period to determine if there is enought support to keep it running.
