Independent umpire to set councillors’ pay

An independent umpire will dictate the allowances paid to South East mayors and councillors ahead of next year’s elections in October-November, following passage of legislation through parliament.

“This will create a far more independent and transparent process; currently councillors can vote each year on their own allowances,” State/Local Government Relations Minister Gail Gago said.

The independent umpire will take into account of the size, population and revenue of the council as well as any relevant economic, social, demographic and regional factors.

The remuneration tribunal was established in 1990 and already determines the allowances of parliamentarians, judges and other statutory office holders.
