In a repeat of last year’s results, Country has proven it knows how to slog its way to victory while its City counterparts has retained its limited over title in the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association’s GEM City v Country weekend.
Country, led by Mil Lel captain Craig Lock, registered a comfortable 9/149 on the Frew Park pitch in its Twenty20 innings on Friday night, setting the scene for an entertaining City innings.
Having won the toss, Country took to the crease while daylight remained strong, openers Marcus Von Duve and Michael McGurk making the most of the conditions to establish a 27 run partnership before City opening bowler Shane Dycer bowled Von Duve for 13 on the last ball of the third over.
Nathan Smith could only add a single before he fell to Scott Allen on the last ball of the following over.
Yahl batsman Ben Wilson steadied the ship and combined well with McGurk to form a 30 run partnership before Wilson (13) was caught off the bowling of Dycer, leaving Country on 3/66.
Lock was next at the crease and showed poise and maturity that no doubt secured his spot as captain.
Partnering well with McGurk, the pair added 43 runs before McGurk finally came undone off the spin of Bryon Cleaver, finishing on a match high 48.
Ten runs later, Lock was sent walking on 26 after Marcus Wallis took a textbook catch off the bowling of City captain David Somerfield.
Nathan Fulton was caught plum by Cleaver in the next over for 1, putting Country at 6/119.
Chayce Fox (0) and Shaun Tate (0) didn’t spend long at the crease, Cleaver getting on a hat trick in his fourth over but unable to claim the magical third wicket.
Lachlan Jones and Nick Blachut made sure Country’s tail wagged a little, both posting scores of 13 before Somerfield striked again, removing Jones.
Callum Hudson managed to make it down the pitch once before the innings came to an end.
City bowled cleanly — only conceding five sundries — with Cleaver claiming 4/19 off four overs while Somerfield (2÷19) and Dycer (2÷39) were the only other multiple wicket takers.
Cleaver was unable to mimic his strong strong bowling performance with the bat, falling for a duck on the 10th ball of the innings.
Fellow opener Dion Stratford was able to put in a strong individual effort to help City reach 50 before North’s Michael Silvy — who, along with Matt Bruorton, replaced West Gambier wicketkeeper Paul Harding — was caught off the bowling of Mitch Collins for 7.
