Be at the table or join the menu

The impact of emissions trading on the dairy industry won’t be known for some time, according to speakers at the SA Dairyfarmers Association South East annual meeting in Mount Gambier today.
While methane gas from cows has been blamed as an environmental polluter, farmers are hopeful of receiving credits for pasture growth and soil sequestration.
The industry also expects to receive compensation on trade grounds.
SADA chief executive Ken Lyons said the Labor Government’s position was gradually evolving.
“It’s something we need to monitor because if you’re not at the table you’re on the menu,” he said.
“Even if we are left out of the scheme, increasing costs in other areas like fuel is an area of concern.”
