Big yarding of lambs at Glenburnie

The Mount Gambier and District Saleyards recorded its second largest sheep and lamb yarding in history on Wednesday as demand peaked in the lead up to Christmas.

Nearly 22,400 head of sheep and lambs were yarded at the Glenburnie facility, up more than 8600.

Traditionally known as a large cattle selling centre, the Glenburnie saleyards sold nearly 13,890 more sheep this week than Naracoorte.

The Naracoorte saleyards is the largest sheep selling centre in South Australia.

Glenburnie saleyards manager Mike Atwell said it was a good result for the selling centre.

“The lambs were ready for sale and good money was being paid,” Mr Atwell said.

He said the number of markets before Christmas was now running out and good money was being paid for prime lambs.

Meanwhile, O’Connor and Graney spokesperson Neil Quirk said it was normal to have a couple of 20,000-plus head yardings this time of year.

He said demand was high because it was the second last full market before the new year.

Mr Quirk said the prices were also “very good”, with some agents averaging more than $100 for prime lambs.

He said the price per kilogram had been firm all season and seasonal conditions had been favourable for producers.

  • Full market wrap in The Border Watch on Friday.
