Rebekah Lowe is collecting bras for Fiji

Millicent radio station manager Rebekah Lowe is collecting second-hand bras for “Operation Uplift” - an international service appeal to support indigenous Fijian women.

A chronic bra shortage has proved a major health risk to Fiji’s busty population.

The average Fijian earns less than $4.50 an hour, while the cost of a new bra is about $40.

Many Fijian women can’t afford a bra and face medical issues from not wearing one in the humid climate.

Ms Lowe started “Operation Uplif” in April and said she was pleased with the generous response.

“When the state coordinator Maxine Jones called me I rang people in Millicent, Mount Gambier and Naracoorte and asked if they would help out,” she said.

“We have three collection boxes in Millicent - one at the radio station, at Heaven on a Hanger and at Zodiac Cards and Gifts.

“Josephine’s in Mount Gambier and the local ABC radio station are also involved.”

So far 1574 bras have been sent from Millicent to Fiji and Ms Lowe said there were about 400 more to be sorted.

“I know women get attached to their bras and some don’t even think of donating them,” Ms Lowe said.

“No matter how old they are, we want them. We have even received under-wires and hooks for repairing bras.”

Rotary is supporting the scheme, using its duty exemption on second-hand goods to transport the bras.

Although the biggest sizes are the most needed and the hardest to find, bras of any size are welcomed because they prevent tissue damage in developing girls.

If any men would like to assist, cash donations are also appreciated.
