Mount Gambier students have excelled in SACE results announced yesterday.

While Samantha Iannella achieved a perfect tertiary entrance rank of 99.95pc, fellow Grant High School student Hannah Pham also scored strongly with 99.85, including a merit in specialist mathematics.

“At the end of a long and demanding academic program, staff at Grant High School are enormously proud of the Year 12 students who have been exemplary in their approach to school life throughout the course of the year,” assistant principal Sam Copping said.

He said Sarah Eastace, who scored a TER of 91.95, also gained merit in practical art and the school was pleased hard work by students and staff was continuing to pay off, as shown by outstanding individual results and ongoing improvements in overall scores.

He said 14pc of Grant High School students achieved a higher TER than 90 and another 31pc scored above 80.

Hannah told The Border Watch she hoped to use her high score to enter medicine studies at Adelaide University and she would otherwise pursue dentistry or oral health.

She said medicine would allow her to specialise, embark on a lifetime of learning and improve the lives of others.

“The country needs more doctors,” she said.

Tenison Woods College students also scored strongly with Laura Elliot-Jones and Emily Pulford named joint duxes with scores of 98.85.

Laura said she hoped to pursue a bachelor of science in Melbourne.

“I don’t know what I want to do so will keep my options open and have always wanted to go to Melbourne,” she said.

Emily said she hoped to study medical sciences at Flinders University in Adelaide.

“I’m interested in the medical side of things, but didn’t want to go as far as being a doctor,” she said.

Nineteen Tenison Woods College students, representing 26pc of the Year 12 contingent, achieved a TER of over 90 while 13 more (18pc) gained a TER of greater than 80.

The two duxes, along with Frances McInerney, Emily McPharlin and Jacinta Oulton achieved straight A scores for all five of their subjects.

Mount Gambier High School’s top achievers were Ridhwaan Moolla with 99.60 after scoring six As and Nicole Feast with 99.05 after five As.

Both students also scored merits in English studies.

While Nicole plans to take a year off to gain “life experience” and then study arts and science, Ridhwaan plans to move to Perth to study creative advertising and graphic design.

Principal Peter McKay said a total of 192 A grades were achieved by the school’s SACE students, representing 30pc of grades, which was 50pc above the state average.

He said the nine merit certificates awarded to students was also more than twice the state average.

Eighteen of the school’s students achieved a TER over 90 and an additional 27 scored a TER over 80, putting 44pc of students in the top 20pc of the state.

“I am extremely proud of all of our Year 12 students and their application to their studies in an endeavour to achieve at the highest level possible,” Mr McKay said.
