A big crowd defied the rain to attend the grand opening of Mount Gambier’s new library and community centre today.
It is the biggest community infrastructure project completed since the civic centre 25 years ago and has been described as being one of the best modern libraries in Australia.
Mayor Steve Perryman officially unveiled the commemorative plaque (pictured) and nine community members simultaneously cut a ribbon to open the doors.
Representing Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who is in Copenhagen, South Australian Labor Senator Dana Wortley said the Federal Government had contributed $3.5m to the overall project as part of the economic stimulus package.
“The new centre will allow schools and community members to meet, learn and conduct research,” she said.
“There will be an emphasis on meeting youth needs, with many programs on offer.”
Senator Wortley predicted the three Sony PlayStations inside the library would be popular with local young people.
She also commended the children’s cave, the cafe and the “five-star” parenting room components of the “fantastic” new facility.

I love the children’s area and the parenting room!!!!!
it will be interesting to know how many parents will be using the new library as a drop in centre for their kids when they go shopping with the computer games on offer and the internet available and also the kids friendly zone.
