The Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association and Gambier Earth Movers have partnered to introduce an annual competition against Glenelg District Cricket Club, the Waterside Cup.

While rain has hampered cricket over the past few weeks, the inaugural Waterside Cup match hopes to go off without a hitch tomorrow following months of negotiations between the two bodies.

Penola captain George Kidman will lead the 12-man squad at Frew Park with the match due to get underway at 12.30pm on Saturday (December 19).

The squad will boast high levels of experience and leadership with North Gambier one day captain Gavin Coon, Mil Lel captain Craig Lock, South Gambier one day and Twenty20 captain David Somerfield and East Gambier one day captain Dion Stratford all taking part.

The focus of the annual match will be to provide strong competitive opportunities for MGDCA players, and to build on the current direct relationship between the MGDCA and the GDCC through the South Australian Cricket Association grade club/country association affiliation program.

The Waterside Cup will also provide the GDCC and SACA with direct access and exposure to MGDCA players with the potential to progress to the SACA grade competition and beyond.
