Greater Mount Gambier Tourism has a new leadership and direction, with a focus on increasing the region’s presence at trade shows among its aims.

Lucas Seebohm was elected the new chairman about a month ago as part of a committee blending new and existing members that will focus on increasing visitor numbers and building opportunities for the tourism sector to expand and develop.

Mr Seebohm was previously vice-president of the organisation for a year after returning to Mount Gambier a few years ago and taking up work as office manager at Kalganyi Caravan Park.

“I want to promote Mount Gambier and increase its position as a centre of tourism excellence with its wide range of natural and man-made attractions,” he said, explaining he also wanted to build links with schools and TAFE as education should be a key focus for the group.

The organisation has also appointed its first media relations officer, Brenton Lynch-Rhodes, who has travelled internationally as an engineer before returning to Mount Gambier, where he plans to establish the Gourmet Tour and Table tourism business.

Mr Lynch-Rhodes said tourism injected $100m annually into Mount Gambier with 450,000 visitors.

“The industry needs to be looked after and fostered,” he said.

Over the next year the organisation will also focus on fostering closer working relationships with other tourism and related bodies at all levels and building the area’s reputation as a centre of excellence for high quality sustainable tourism.
