Mount Gambier police were blown away last week when, upon entering a man’s house with a drug warrant, they allegedly found a live military issue hand grenade (pictured).
The man, 36, was arrested and charged on December 27 for producing a commercial quantity of cannabis after police allegedly located 43 plants at his Moten Street residence.
He was also charged with possessing marijuana for the purpose of sale when another eight plants were allegedly found drying in his shed.
The 1980s vintage grenade was allegedly located in the same room as some of the drugs.
Police operations manager Sgt Andy Stott said the discovery had shocked investigating officers and detectives.
“From time to time police become aware of these items within our community, which we generally hear about through people informing on others or in deceased estates,” Sgt Stott said on Monday.
“If someone is in illegal possession of a weapon, or knows of someone who has one, we would like them to contact us rather than leave the dangerous item in the community, so we can go through the proper and safe disposal methods.
“Military issue grenades are made to harm people.
“This demonstrates what we are faced with in the community that puts people’s lives at risk.”
Sgt Stott said police would make enquiries with the Army to ascertain how the man obtained the grenade, which was destroyed on Monday.
The man will be charged, under Commonwealth or State legislation, for its possession.
