Libs promise $12m for highway upgrade
Posted on February 6, 2010, 4:04pm
The Liberal Party has announced it will duplicate the Riddoch Highway from the Mount Gambier Airport to Mount Gambier at a cost of $12 million if elected on March 20.
Liberal candidate for Mount Gambier, Steve Perryman, said the announcement demonstrates the Liberals understand the importance of roads infrastructure in regional South Australia.
“The Riddoch Highway is the main access road connecting Mount Gambier to the airport – and it’s in dire need of repair,” Mr Perryman said.
“The State Liberals under Isobel Redmond will commit $12 million to transform the Riddoch Highway into a 7.5km dual carriageway from the Jubilee Highway to just north of the airport.
“In fact, the Riddoch Highway is used heavily by locals, tourists and industry, especially freight trucks, which demonstrates the importance of safe roads in regional SA.
“Back in 2006 the State Liberals committed to the Riddoch Highway duplication, and today’s $12 million announcement is a clear indication of where our priorities are.
“Under the Rann Labor Government roads have deteriorated. Put simply, a Redmond Liberal Government will restore safety to Mount Gambier’s roads.”
Mr Perryman said the Rann Labor Government had no real understanding or interest in country South Australian communities.

It would be more to the point if they put traffic lights at the Wireless Road intersection at the same time.
Anne — I don’t know that traffic lights are the solution, unless you’re going to put a detour for truck traffic.. There’s no way known a truck would be able to stop effectively for a red light, with the pace they’d need to maintain to get up the hill..
I do agree, though, that something more perhaps needs to be done..
i agree with anne this is a better option may slow the trucks down the riddoch highway wont happen passing lanes between naracoorte and keith is more urgent.
i worked as a truck driver in the usa for six years and got used to the Eisenhower highway system.dual even triple lanes all over the country, built in case of war.that makes our roads look like goat tracks.they built roads with forthought not scrimping and counting the cost of every inch of tar.dont you all think it is time we caught up and grew with the times?a good road would save lives.no need for these ridiculous passing lanes dotted every so often.truck drivers in this country are heros in my book and take their lives in their hands every time they get behind the wheel!
I guess in a perfect world we would have a high quality ring road around the city for trucks to use. This would keep them out of the town and increase thier delivery time as no matter what side of the city they approached, they could get on the ring road and go around the town quickly.
diplomat.i am not talking about ring roads, this is not a circus,no! proper four lane highways out in the country.the roads the drivers and the rest of us travel
The Libs are full of rubbish promises for the South East every time an election rolls around.….last time they were going to upgrade Wireless road and spend $14million on a duel lane out to the Mount Gambier Airport.….Load of garbage followed by more garbage.….….
i got a letter today from the Liberal Candidate Steve Perryman telling me how he was going to “Turn Mount Gambier Around” and “get the best possible deal for Mount Gambier” and the real winner” “Ending Labor’s City Focus” but then down the bottom of his letter it says “Printed by Lane Print, Adelaide” seems to me with even the most simplest of things like getting a flyer printed the LIBERAL PARTY have chosen to.….….…. SUPPORT ADELAIDE BUSINESSES INSTEAD OF MOUNT GAMBIER BUSINESSES.….….….
I will be interested to see who the other party’s chose to use for their campaign material.….…
haha, well spotted.
This dual lane carriage way out to airport is an absolute waste of money, Mr Perryman get down to the real issues, spend that money on the hospital, the wireless road — penola rd intersection, the absolute dire need for funding for youth projects in this city. If they don”t play sport , there is nothing for them to do but go to the pubs, get drunk, get hooked on drugs and then we finish up paying for them via the correctional system, health system as they become drug dependent.
Let’s see some money spent on employment projects, traineeships, etc. Nobody wants this road to the airport!
