At least 30 more sightings of big cats prowling around the South East and Western Victoria have been reported to experts since last Thursday.
And something “very big” is living and lurking around Penola which kills cattle.
Naturalists and researchers, Simon Townsend and John Turner, assisted by Tantanoola-raised Joanna Seidel, have had a “fantastic response” as a result of The Border Watch article in last Thursday’s edition.
“The reports of sightings since The Border Watch article appeared are very consistent,” Mr Townsend said.
“That is, a large feline animal, generally seen crossing roads at night or walking along the side of the road at night when it thought it was all alone.
“It is uniformly large in size - about the size of a car bonnet with a long tail usually turned up at the end and black and tan in colour.
“Just about all reports are along those lines.”
Mr Townsend said the reports were coming from people of all walks of life and he believed they were sincere and genuine.
“A school teacher slowed down to watch two kangaroos fighting on the side of the road and saw a big black cat crouched down watching them,” he said.
“We are not talking about people seeing them when they are driving home from the pub; we are talking about people driving to and from work and doing ordinary things like that.”
Mr Townsend and Mr Turner are preparing a database of sightings and would still like to hear from anyone who has seen a big cat.
Mr Townsend can be contacted on 0427 101 223 and Mr Turner can be contacted on 0409 966 439.
