Gearing up for Battle of the Bands

South East musicians have been urged to polish their acts and register their interest to compete against their counterparts in Mount Gambier’s annual battle of the bands.
The fourth annual 5GTR Mount Gambier Battle of the Bands will be held in mid-September at Shadows Entertainment Complex.
5GTR station manager and event organiser Matt Wall has called on bands to register expressions of interest as planning gets underway for the annual music competition.
“It will be an all-ages event on a Sunday afternoon and there should be plenty of great prizes available again,” he said.
Mr Wall said the event was targeted at young bands, but all styles of performers were welcome to compete, although pre-recorded backing music was discouraged.
“We usually have full bands enter and it would be hard to win first place without being able to gain points for drumming or bass,” he said.
“But all sorts of acts are welcome and although we mostly attract rock bands, if jazz or country groups wanted to take part that would be great.”
Mr Wall said a panel of three judges would assess the performances and he hoped a strong turn-out of the town’s talented youth bands would enter.
“It is a great way for bands to get recognition and exposure and play on a proper stage with a decent sound set-up,” he said.
“It is not cut-off for people over 25 or anything, but usually a great chance for younger people, rather than bands who have played together for 30 years — older bands usually feel they have had their turn and leave it to the new generation.”
The annual event is presented as a fundraiser for 5GTR with a cover-charge covering costs and helping support the community radio station.
“It’s mainly for the town’s musos though,” Mr Wall said.
“There are not many things like this going on in town.”
To lodge an expression of interest, visit the station at 25 Alexander Street or call 8725 9833.
