Does size matter?

Posted on July 31, 2008, 12:12pm

A Victoria University researcher is trying to prove what most women already know - size does matter.

Dr Gerard Kennedy is investigating the link between men’s penis size, body image and mental health.

“We want to know whether men who report satisfaction with their penis size have higher self-esteem and better body image than men who are dissatisfied with the size of their penis,” Dr Kennedy said.

Researchers already predicted the outcome of the study might prove that men with an actual or perceived larger-than-average penis may experience greater confidence and improved body image than men who believe they have smaller ‘members’.

“If men believe that a larger penis size is the cultural ideal then this could affect how they perceive their general physical attractiveness,” Dr Kennedy said.

So far more than 300 men have already taken part in Dr Kennedy’s psychology study which also aims to look at the effect of masculinity on self-esteem and whether men with low self-esteem are more likely to use the internet for dating and socialising.

“Given that first impressions during dating situations are largely dependent on physical attractiveness, individuals with low physical self-esteem may find it easier to use the internet for dating and socialising purposes,” he said.

This is said to be the first time the relationships between male body image, self-reported physical attributes, self-esteem and preference for internet dating have been investigated.

Magazine articles and photo perfect images, television, newspapers, radio advertising (like the use it…or…lose it ad) reinforces self-image and expectations, and even though they are unrealistic…are part of the culture we live in.
    Body image, youth, killer looks…whatever…
The internet dating sites and social connections without having to physically prove certain attributes…is perhaps the only safe medium…without commitment or loss.

Size most definitely matters–or lack of –when you hear your girlfriend telling her girlfriend that “my 10 year old brother has more than Dan does” it can hurt. And it’s best to just leave that to the “bigger boys”. I might add, this was back in 1969–and it resonates nearly 40 years later.

This is ridiculous. Penis size matters about as much as the size of someone’s nostrils. Anyone who says it does is primarily so focused on the size that that’s ALL they can focus on. Most of the stimulation is within 2-3 inches. After that, it’s all in your mind.
