A bit of Hollywood will come to Mount Gambier in August as Mount Gambier High School presents its latest musical production High School Musical.
The smash hit Disney television movie, which has spawned two sequels, various stage shows, video games and merchandise, has been adapted as a stage show which has been wowing audiences all around the world.
On August 14 more than 60 students will take to the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage to sing and dance their way through the tale of star crossed lovers, basketball, music and manipulation.
Musical director Judith Kelly said the modern day adaptation of Romeo and Juliet held a lot of good lessons for the students about breaking expectations and following their own dreams.
“The production is about students discovering they are allowed to be something other than what their peer group expects of them,” she said.
“We thought it would be popular with young audiences because it’s so well known to them.”
Work began on the production more than six months ago, but Mrs Kelly said a lot of that time was spent on preparation and auditioning.
“We spent a lot of time workshopping the scenes before we held auditions, to give everyone a chance to show off their skills,” she said.
“The skills training was part of our curriculum and by doing that first the students were able to present themselves better in the auditions.”
With only a few short weeks to go until the show opens the cast got a chance to show off their progress to the rest of Mount Gambier High School during an assembly on Wednesday morning.
Mrs Kelly said the students were excited and looked forward to performing the show for their peers and the rest of the community.
“There are a few last minute adjustments to make and sets to finish, but the students are definitely ready to get up on that stage,” she said.
High School Musical will be showing at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre from Thursday, August 14 to Saturday, August 16 at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost $22 for adults, $15 concession and are available from the theatre.

I have not seen the Disney movie but I went to Friday’s session of this production and I give everyone involved a five out of five … Thanks for a great night out …
My sister loves the HSM movies, and is waiting excitedly until #3 comes out.
I took her to see this on Friday night, and she had a ball - and even said that she believed this performance to be pretty close, if not better than the movie.
All the cast were absolutely amazing but especially the person that played Ms Darbus - i believe Hannah Bruhn - you were fantastic!\
Well done Mount High!
