Students inspire Olympians

Students from Mount Gambier and district are writing letters to inspire their favourite athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games through Australia Post’s Letter Link program.

Participating schools include Glenburnie, Kalangadoo, Mulga Street and Yahl Primary Schools and Tenison Woods College.

The program encourages students to write creative and innovative messages to inspire and lift the spirits of their favourite Australian Olympian, with Australia Post posties personally delivering their letters in the Olympic Village in Beijing.

Letter Link has been operating at Olympics since Barcelona in 1992.

One of the district’s 494 talented writers may also come away with a visit from an Olympian if their letter is judged the most entertaining and well written.

Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett and Cathy Freeman have proved to be some of the favourites of past Olympics, but Beijing is expected to see the birth of some new Aussie stars.

Australia Post’s Letter Link ambassador, swimmer Jessicah Schipper, is looking forward to receiving letters of support from back home.

“It is great to receive letters at the Olympic Village to inspire you to perform at your best and also to show how much support you have back home,” Schipper said.

Schools and students are encouraged to visit the official Australia Post Letter Link site at www.auspost.com.au/letterlink or to write to their favourite athlete at: Australian Olympic Team, Letter Link, GPO Box 5803, Melbourne 3001.
