Dog poo spoils Blue Lake walk

Posted on August 6, 2008, 5:05pm

I would like to express my utter disgust at the lack of common courtesy and decency of some dog owners who walk their dog/s on the footpath around the Blue Lake.

I am a regular walker around the Blue Lake and up until now, haven’t minded dodging the regular few dog deposits that get left behind.

However, after beginning my walk this morning and counting no less than 15 piles of dog droppings on a 1km stretch of footpath, something needs to be said.

Dog owners have a responsibility when they choose to walk their dog on a public footpath or in any public area for that matter. Clean up after them!

Consider the other users: all the other walkers/joggers who have to pass by this mess; mums who push their prams through this excrement then take it home with them on the wheels of their pram; the tourists who come to visit our beautiful Blue Lake only to have their view spoilt by watching where they have to walk.

Don’t forget too the matter of health and hygiene that goes with having this excrement laying around, letting off odours while baking in the sun or going soggy with rain.

There are two dog litter bag supply boxes situated around the lake (however empty for the past week, no excuse). When you leave home with your car/house keys, mobile phone, wallet (all necessities), take a plastic bag with you. It is a necessity as well for a responsible dog owner.

The other solution: Ban dogs from being walked on the footpath until these dog owners clean up their act! You will earn respect when you show others respect first.

Thats awful ! .…..and the problem doesnt just occur around The Blue Lake. We have stepped in dog poop in our own front yard so many times Ive lost count, but the stupid part about that is.….…. WE DONT OWN A DOG !!!!

Start cleaning up your doggy mess pet owners ! ..Its filthy. You might think no one has noticed that your dog just took a dump, and discreetly walk away as if someone elses dog did it, but people are always watching and do think how irresponsible you are. If that someone happens to report you to the police or council you will receive a nasty fine.

If thats not enough to convince you to clean up, think about how many people and children are stepping in it and dragging your mess home. It is so much easier for you to pick it up off the ground than it is for someone else to scrape it out of the crevices of their shoes with a stick. This stuff sometimes contains ring worms and tape worms and is a huge health hazard. It doesnt belong on our shoes.

It is not only the dog walkers around the Blue Lake who are inconsiderate and forget the doggie bag but on countless occasions I have seen people walking their dogs in the main street without a doggie bag to be seen — and on several occasions there has been doggie-do-dos in front of shop fronts and in the middle of the footpaths it makes for an unpleasant trip out. It would be nice to see police fine people just because they have a dog out on a lease and no doggie-bag in hand. I think this would make people stop and think if it is a wise move to bring their animals for a walk anywhere. I have to say, I have seen regular dog walkers in the main street and not on one single occasion has the dog walkers been carrying anything but maybe the local paper and of course the dog lead in hand. Maybe some of these people are more concerned about their health than their duty as a responsible dog owner …

I wrote to the council some time ago about this and there was an education activity conducted in conjunction with local dog club — seems like you cant teach an old dog new tricks — perhaps some doggie doo cameras and fines would help.

And we have people worried about flouride in the water! I would be more concerned about the disease and other nasties from the dog droppings. Perhaps its time to ban them from the catchment area and let them walk around the railway land.

Its not only the walkers we have to worry about these days. I regularly see dog owners driving with their dog in the car, only to stop in front of a random house to let the dog do its business on the persons front lawn! This has happened to me and several other homes up and down my street. I cannot believe just how rude dog owners have become! Dog droppings have ruined our front garden and it has taken months for the grass to regrow. If you drive with you dog and it needs to poo, please stop on the side of the road along an area where no one lives. THEN PICK IT UP!! Its not that hard. And if you find it gross imagine how others feel at having to pick up someone’s dog droppings, that do not own a dog.

It’s the unexpected things you see as you negotiate the safest way around a pile of poo.

This morning I almost tripped over someone’s dodgy looking nickers, and a used condom.

Some people engage in weird activities on the footpath…we humans can do it doggie style or whatever … even on the footpath?

Okay, that must be good for the soul, but awfully rough on the knees…
