South East excluded from water trial

South East residents have been excluded from receiving free water efficient showerheads as part of a new trial exchange program, but there are chances the program will be extended.
The State Government and Local Government Association this week launched a two-month trial during which residents in 10 local council areas can exchange their old showerheads for new water efficient showerheads.
The Swap and Save showerhead exchange program trial included Marion, Mitcham, Charles Sturt, Campbelltown, West Torrens, Unley, Onkaparinga, Salisbury, Victor Harbor and Port Augusta.
However, Water Security Minister Karlene Maywald said if the trial proved successful, the initiative would be offered to all South Australian councils by the end of the year.
Ms Maywald said the trial is a step forward to encourage people to save water in and around the home.
“Conventional showerheads can use up to 18 litres of water a minute, compared with less than nine litres of water using a water efficient showerhead,” Ms Maywald said.
Meanwhile, SA Water South East service delivery manager Andy McPharlin encouraged residents to take advantage of the State Government’s H2ome Rebate Scheme.
Under the scheme, residents are entitled to various rebates, including rebates of up to $30 for installing low-flow shower heads, $50 for spending $150 on eligible water efficient gardening goods and $200 on a new water efficient washing machine with a minimum four star rating.
