Admella tragedy remembered

Posted on August 17, 2008, 6:06pm

Australia’s first ever national Merchant Navy Day will be celebrated in Port Adelaide on September 3 with the focus on next year’s Admella 150 Festival.

Some of the festival organisers will join merchant seamen veterans in a community march along Queens Wharf to the major Admella memorial in St Vincent Street, Port Adelaide.

The memorial, which graphically illustrates the tragic loss of the Admella off Cumberland Rocks in 1849, will be the centrepiece for the service and commemoration that will follow the march.

A special information booth for the Admella 150 Festival will be used to attract Port Adelaide residents to Mount Gambier for the 2009 event.

The S.S. Admella was actually wrecked on Carpenters Reef near Carpenter Rocks South Australia on 6 August 1859.
