The Barn Palais was packed wall to wall with gorgeous models sporting glamorous hairstyles and stunning make up on Sunday, as the 2008 TAFE SA Hairdressing Competition was held.

More than 120 hairdressers and make up artists set to work on creative and eye catching hair and makeup creations, hoping to catch the attention of the judges and inspiring the crowd of hundreds who came along to watch the show.

Someone who did impress the judging panel was Jess Little of Evolve, who took out the top honour of the night, the 2008 Hairdresser of the Year award.

Jess was successful in all four of the categories she entered, obtaining first place for both the men’s restyle cut colour and finish and the ladies high fashion restyle, cut and colour categories.

She was also awarded third placings in the Gala Evening Upstyle and Oceania Under the Sea categories.

She said the level of success she obtained was unexpected.

“I was really happy with everything I did, but you just never know who will win,” she said.

Having competed for the past six years, Jess said every year was a challenge.

“I really love the competitions, it’s so much hard work and I do start to stress out a bit in the weeks leading up to it,” she said.

“It’s hard to know if you’re got the right ideas.

“You just never know what the judges are looking for.”

Taking out the 2008 Apprentice of the Year award was Katie Gordon of Giannis, who was awarded first place in the Oceania under The Sea open category and second place in the apprentice categories of men’s restyle cut, colour and finish and Parade at the Palais.

Katie said she was incredibly excited by her win, as was her number one fan, her mother.

“Mum was over the moon,” Katie said.

“I thought she was going to cry.”

Mount Gambier salon Giannis was the most successful salon of the night, taking out first placings in five of the seven hairdressing categories.

Their apprentices were particularly successful, with Giannis taking all three placings in all three apprentice categories.

Giannis’ sister business, The Body Retreat beauty salon, was also a big winner, taking both placings in the two makeup categories - high fashion catwalk glamour make up and bridal makeup.

Make-up artist Jessie Eldridge was awarded both first placings while trainee Matilda Warren was the runner up for both categories.

Giannis and The Body Retreat owner Katina Sims commended her staff for their success, which she attributed to a strong training ethos within the business.

“We train long and hard for the competitions,” Ms Sims said.

“Our senior staff team works together, training all the apprentices throughout the year and then especially through the competition.”

Ms Sims said she was particularly proud of the efforts put in by the salon’s apprentices.

“The judges told me that our apprentices’ work was as high a standard as the senior category,” she said.

“I think that’s a testament to what we do.

“In the nine years we’ve been open, one of our apprentices has been apprentice of the year every year.”
