Mount Gambier is experiencing a building boom, according to figures released by the city council.
“Mount Gambier is experiencing continued growth in all building areas and in particular with new housing, which is viewed as a good gauge of the local economy,” Cr Eugene Coscarelli said.
A total of 103 dwellings have been approved in the nine months to March 2008 compared with 123 for the whole of 2006-07.
The value of these approvals was $36.2 million.
“The level of development so far in this financial year is extremely healthy,” Cr Coscarelli said.
“Council’s development officers welcome early consultation with developers, residents and all people within the building industry to discuss their development projects in an effort to provide a smoother transition through the approval process that can on occasions be thought of as daunting and frustrating.”
Cr Coscarelli said the assessment of development applications could occur in a number of stages before a full development approval was issued.
A number of guides are available from the council offices which address the specific information requirements relating to certain activities and developments.
These guides have been designed to assist people prepare and lodge their applications.
