The Beachport branch of the National Trust was recently awarded the honour of “best volunteer operated museum in Australia” through the Radio National Marvellous Museums Award.
The Beachport Old Wool and Grain Store Museum comprises a beautiful historic building in the heart of Beachport and offers a comprehensive series of exhibits focused on the people, activities and industries of the Lower South East.
Fifty-nine museums across Australia entered the competition.
The Beachport submission highlighted the informal style of the exhibits, which emphasise people and activities.
Chair of the town’s National Trust branch Marcia Lorenz said the award was a great honour for the “10 or so” regular volunteers.
“We can all feel proud that we are a little town that has achieved national recognition for something we have largely done alone,” she said.
“In the world of museums we have been put on the map.
“This recognition has already brought more visitors to our door.
“Our contribution to tourism in this area should not be under estimated.”
