Soccer brawl
A Western Border Soccer Association match was abandoned on Sunday after players, officials and spectators staged an all-in brawl.

The match at McDonald Park between the Gambier City Sharks and Millicent United turned farcical after an unidentified spectator invaded the pitch at the 65th minute and confronted Sharks player Jon Stemberger.

The spectator, believed to be a Millicent supporter, wrestled Stemberger to the ground as a melee involving almost every player, a large number of officials and a growing number of spectators erupted.

The melee lasted several minutes before police patrol cars arrived at the ground and dispersed the crowd, taking statements from several officials which could lead to charges.

Embattled referee Andrew Coshan had no choice but to abandon the game.

Thank you, Border Watch, for getting even more people to talk about and think about the greatest game in the world.

What a disgrace. I am no soccer fan but this behaviour is not good for the sport or any sport. It is hard enough getting parents and families to support local sports and get involved and this gives them more reason to keep their kids inside and not joining clubs.

Anyone who starts this trouble whether they are a player, official or spectator should not only be banned for a season but made it volunteer during week night practices, wash uniforms, sell raffle tickets, cook bbq’s, clean clubrooms etc to replace the parents and volunteers that the club has now lost because of their stupidity.

This tarnishes the world game and sport in general and adds to the unwarranted stereotype of soccer being a game for thugs and hatred towards ethnicity.
