Last week the Legislative Council voted down the Government’s legislation for a referendum on four-year terms and 16 members in that house.

Mercy must be tempered with justice

The Scottish Government created a furore last week when it released Lockerbie bomber Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi.

While serving a life sentence for his role in the death of 270 people in the terrorist attack on a passenger jet in 1988, Megrahi was sent back to Libya on compassionate grounds as he has terminal cancer. Read more

Public access to courts is critical

This week the Premier raised the prospect of making television footage of court proceedings a common possibility, with many appropriate safeguards of course.
