Wagyu producer takes top food honour

Full blood Wagyu beef from Millicent’s Mayura Station has been awarded a gold medal at the National Produce Awards for the second consecutive year.
The ultra-premium beef produced on some of the Limestone Coast’s richest grazing land was a stand-out entry in the “From the Paddock” category, out-shining some of the country’s best pork, quail, veal, rabbit and lamb. Read more
Cream rises to top at dairy awards

Glencoe farmers Joyce and Lyndon Cleggett from Brookleigh Dairy have won the title of top dairy producers in the South East of South Australia region at the fourth annual Westpac Agribusiness and Dairy Australia Australian Dairy Business of the Year Competition.
The couple, who work 340 cows on only 93 hectares, were thrilled to accept the honour. Read more
Coonawarra absent from wine trade push

Dairy takeover bid withdrawn

The board of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter (WCB) has welcomed a decision by Murray Goulburn (MG) to withdraw from a proposed merger of the dairy goods processors.
“We have long maintained a takeover of WCB by MG was not in the best interests of WCB, our shareholders and suppliers,” WCB chairman Frank Davis said. Read more

Big tax threatens small mines

A Mount Gambier and district mining company has raised fears it could be swept up in the Federal Government’s 40pc super profits tax and has called for smaller miners to be exempt.
Gem Group Holdings – which operates a number of quarries in the South East and Victoria – yesterday called on the government not to penalise smaller operators that supplied the domestic market. Read more
Union rejects penalty rates cut

ForestrySA appears set to push ahead with a proposal to cut double time penalty rates for employees on fire duty, despite continued opposition from the workers’ union at a meeting on Tuesday, May 11.
Two thirds of forestry workers recently rejected a proposed enterprise bargaining deal due to the condition when it was forced to a ballot, according to Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) official Travis Lawson. Read more
Small businesses raise tax reform concerns

A Mount Gambier business leader has raised concerns that the proposed hike in compulsory employer superannuation contributions will hurt small businesses that are the “backbone” of the economy.
Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce president Lynette Martin said the rise in superannuation from 9pc to 12pc would add further pain to small businesses.
ACCC raises dairy takeover bid concerns

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned the proposed merger between two regional milk giants could substantially lessen competition in the South East of South Australia.
The commission has released its preliminary views of the proposed merger between Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory and Murray Goulburn, but is not expected to announce its final decision until June.
While the Warrnambool-based company is against the merger, rival milk processor Murray Goulburn has been aggressively pushing the move. Read more
Outlook improves for K&S

The directors of Mount Gambier-based transport company K&S Corporation today announced a net profit after tax of $9.2m for the half year ending December 31.
Operating revenue for the first half was $217.2m, a decrease of 12.5pc on the prior corresponding period. Read more
