Researching youth migration

University of Adelaide honors graduate Elspeth Grant is currently researching a youth migration scheme for British boys administered by the South Australian Government in 1913 – 14.

She is hoping to get in touch with descendants of these migrants and researchers with similar interests. Read more

Seeking to know about Snow Stafford

Port Pirie based sisters Gloria O’Dea and Irene Harvey have been in Mount Gambier the last couple of days, looking to piece together a family jigsaw.

Mesdames O’Dea and Harvey have two football medals belonging to their late father Leonard “Snow” Stafford, who is known to have played football in the Mount Gambier district in the 1920s and 1930s. Read more

Museum grants preserve heritage

Penola’s Mary MacKillop Centre is the big winner in a State Government grant scheme for museums.

The facility will receive $15,000 for stage two of the exhibition “Josephite Education — These are the Children I Love” from a $145,000 statewide pool in the History Trust Museums Accreditation and Grants Program for 2008-09. Read more

New exhibit at Nangwarry museum

The Nangwarry Forestry and Logging Museum received its latest exhibit recently.

A machine once used to load logs onto trucks, and later as a training machine at the Logging Investigations and Training Association, is now permanently on display at the museum. Read more

Carlton great had Mount Gambier link

A controversial former Carlton player with Mount Gambier connections is the subject of a new book being written by Tasmanian Craig Mackie.

Mackie wrote to The Border Watch saying William Alexander Lang, known as Alex or “Bongo”, married a Mount Gambier woman Catherine McVicar on Feburary 15, 1937. Read more

Merrett family reunion

The descendants of William and Mary Ann Merrett will gather for a reunion at the Nhill Racecourse on November 1 – 2, 2008.

This will be the first time in 31 years that all 10 branches of the Merrett family have come together. The first reunion was held in Bordertown in 1977. Read more

Cemetery tour gives insight
