Young dancers shine at championships

Students from Mount Gambier’s MJ Dance Studio have returned from Melbourne where they competed in the Showcase State Dance Championships with results that will take them into the nationals with a competitive edge.

Over 500 acts had entered the event, which was a qualifying competition to attend the nationals on the Gold Coast. Read more

School arts dream comes to fruition

The Mount Gambier High School arts faculty, community and dignitaries gathered on Thursday, August 19, to celebrate the official opening of the Garry Costello Centre for Creative Arts — a haven that will continue to “build the education revolution” through self-expression.

With four art and design studios, a gallery, information technology suite, performance space that seats over 140 and plenty of storage room, the centre was described as “remarkable” by Mr Costello. Read more

Youth focus on sun safety

The Cancer Council has encouraged Australians aged 12 to 17 years to get creative and bust a myth about skin cancer by entering a short film, image or creative writing piece in the SunSmart competition before September 24.

With one in four teens getting sun burnt on a typical weekend, the competition is an opportunity to show friends and classmates how to be sun smart. Read more

South East performers to showcase talents

More than 60 performers will grace the stage of the Wehl Street Theatre to perform over 350 songs in Showcase 2010 from August 24 to 28.

Singers ranging in age from seven to over 60 will present their interpretation of songs varying in styles from musical theatre, aria, classical, pop, jazz, blues, country and western and folk songs to ballads. Read more

Dance star brings magic to stage

After catapulting to fame on channel Ten’s So You Think You Can Dance, Rhys Bobridge is once again returning to the stage, this time to spread his magic to Mount Gambier audiences with acclaimed children’s show The Fairies.

Resuming his role as Elf, the Fairy Cake Maker, Rhys will perform at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre on August 30 as part of a four-month national tour. Read more

Community band opportunities explored

Musicians of all ages have been invited to attend a “come along and try” session today, August 9, to join in the formation of a new community concert band in Mount Gambier.

The session will be held from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the City Band Hall on the corner of Pick Avenue and Lake Terrace East, with the aim to establish a balanced concert band. Read more

Fresh music talent strikes a chord

The musical namesake of a Coorong camping ground — inspired by a brother and sister’s childhood memories — came to Mount Gambier for the first time on Friday, August 6, having made an impact on the national underground music scene.

Sean and Jessica Braithwaite returned to their hometown with their band Gemini Downs to blow away friends and fans with their raw, energetic folk music. Read more

Theatre reveives $70,000 upgrade
