A woman has spoken out about concerns that her status as a single mother has prevented her from securing a suitable rental property after she has spent more than three months scouring the city’s vacant houses for a potential home.

Under-staffed psychiatric services concern

One psychiatrist will not be enough to maintain a long-term mental health service in the South East, according to the Australian Medical Association’s Andrew Lavender.

South Australian AMA president Dr Lavender told The Border Watch the government would need to invest in up to three psychiatrists for the region in order to retain the service, not just the promised one which Country Health SA says is currently being selected. Read more

Drug affected families find support

A confidential Mount Gambier Family Drug Support Group has been established after many years of advocacy to dispel the myths and stigma attached to drug-dependency, co-morbidity and the families of sufferers.

The support group — providing an outlet for family members and friends of drug-dependent people — met for the first time last week with positive results, according to facilitator Lois Rose. Read more

TAFESA launches new training centre

More than 140 students will have new opportunities for study in Mount Gambier due to the opening of TAFE SA’s building, furnishing, and heavy vehicles and machinery centres, with the potential to attract students from throughout the South East and western Victoria.

Employment, Training and Further Education Minister Jack Snelling opened the new $4.4m facilities on Thursday, August 19,  as part of a $70m government investment in TAFE centres around the state. Read more

Health service blocks access to hospital report

A second attempt to access a review of the Mount Gambier Hospital Accident and Emergency Ward has been knocked back by a Country Health SA Freedom of Information officer.

The report, which is believed to contain information about the number of beds still needed in the emergency ward to meet current medical standards, and details about current waiting times, was compiled and delivered to the hospital by Adelaide-based doctor Peter Stuart early this year. Read more

Fluoride protest ends with vow to keep fighting

Alex Young ended his hunger strike against fluoridation of Mount Gambier’s water on Sunday after he offered to eat in return for cooperation from his supporters for the next stage of his campaign — a “people’s mandate” against the State Government.

The crowd of around 100 people cheered for Mr Young to break his 17-day strike, with several people shouting encouragement, including Mount Gambier’s Florence Grinter, who said the community needed Mr Young alive to continue fighting. Read more

Hospital floats rehabilitation plan

A new rehabilitation unit at the Mount Gambier Hospital for patients recovering from various medical conditions has been funded to employ 22 full-time staff, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a speech pathologist, nurses and a dietitian.

Infrastructure for the rehabilitation hub is not yet in place, but plans have been drawn for an extension to be constructed onto the medical ward, where the unit will be housed. Read more

Donation secures new hospital equipment

What started with only an idea a year ago reached full circle yesterday with the handover of the final donation towards a $100,000 cardiovascular ultrasound system for the Mount Gambier Hospital.

Zena Winser, daughter of trucking magnate Allan Scott AO, made the final donation towards the much needed piece of equipment in the form of $10,000 on behalf of the Scott Group of Companies. Read more

Protestor calls for support

Hunger striker Alex Young has called on the community to gather at the Blue Lake on what he has dubbed “Choice Support Day” on August 15 to show their support for his cause.

The Choice Mount Gambier community action group leader has been on a hunger strike since Thursday, July 29, in protest at the government ignoring a petition calling for a referendum on the addition of fluoride to the Blue Lake’s water supply. Read more
