Mount Gambier weather bureau staff cut

The Mount Gambier weather station’s three staff members will be reduced to only one in the 2009-10 financial year.

As part of the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) restructuring plan, two staff members will be relocated to other weather stations.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast for the next few days indicates a potential for significantly windy conditions.

The State Emergency Service (SES) advises that residents, property owners and business owners should ensure that their properties are prepared to withstand any windy conditions that may arise. Read more

July weather averages

Mount Gambier experienced colder days, milder nights and a slightly drier month in July compared with the long-term average.

The weather bureau recorded 87mm of rain for the month compared with the average of 99. Read more

Wild weather whips region

TWO “mini tornadoes” provided headaches for homeowners on Friday morning, when they were left to clean up damage caused by winds gusting up to 40 knots (76kph) on Thursday night.

Sudden downbursts of wind at the front of heavy thunderstorms, known as microbursts, wreaked havoc across the region.

A Moorak family, who suffered the full brunt of a microburst at around 8.15pm on Thursday were left to count the costs on Friday morning, while a similar event in Mount Gambier at around 10.15pm tore the verandah from a Pinehall Avenue home. Read more

Recent rain welcomed

The South East has experienced a good downpour of rain in recent days, however the region is still a long way off achieving the average June rainfall.

Bureau of Meteorology Mount Gambier Aerodrome weather observer Keon Stevenson said rough weather would continue on Friday morning, but ease in the afternoon.

“There’s a chance of thunderstorms (Thursday) evening and even hail,” Mr Stevenson said. Read more
