2009 start advised for pulp mill works

Forestry Minister Rory McEwen would grant an extension to approvals for Protavia to build the Penola Pulp Mill if the developer needs more time to secure the $1.5b investment for the region.

Limestone Coast Regional Development Board chief executive Grant King told City Council on Tuesday night Protavia had informed the board works would begin at the site early next year. Read more

Kingston reviews electoral options

As required under the Local Government Act, Council is currently conducting an Elector Representation Review to determine if the community would benefit from an alteration to its composition, ward structure or the structure of council itself. Read more

Bypass decision deferred again

Wattle Range Council’s decision on whether to proceed with acquisition of land to build the Penola bypass has been put on hold until December.

More than 120 people attended a special council meeting at Rymill Hall on Tuesday night to witness council’s discussion on the matter, only to hear the decision would be deferred due to the need for legal advice. Read more

Street parade to honour CFS volunteers

The South East branch of the CFS Volunteers Association has invited all interested people to celebrate South Australia’s long firefighting history.

A street parade featuring fire appliances from South Australia and Victoria, some of which have been restored and preserved by the CFS Heritage Committee, will proceed through the heart of Naracoorte later this month. Read more

Robe marina project moves forward

The Robe marina project is moving forward and there is some positive news to report, according to the Robe Marina Committee chairman Bill Hender.

A recent visit to Robe by Kevin Smith from Engineered Water Systems, who supplied and installed the marina equipment, confirmed the infrastructure was in good condition and required only regular scheduled maintenance. Read more

Garden centrepiece unveiled

A giant mother, father and infant sculpted from limestone now gaze over the more than 300 roses planted at the new community garden on Penola’s southern entrance.

Installation of the one tonne sculpture “Love Forgets Not”, which stands more than two metres high, marked a major step forward in the project this week. Read more

Millicent orchid show on Sunday

The Millicent Orchid Society will hold its 21st annual Spring Show in the St Alphonsus Hall from October 4 to 6.
