Bypass affirmed, subject to court

The Penola bypass could finally become a reality after Wattle Range Council decided at a special meeting on Tuesday night to move forward with plans for a western route.
Councillors passed the motion, which is subject to the outcome of the Supreme Court action taken against the council by the Penola and District Residents and Ratepayers Association, 10 – 1 after it was moved by Cr Rob Dycer at the special meeting in Penola. Read more

Wattle Range Council will hold a special council meeting in Penola this month to consider a report on the various options for a Penola bypass.
Chief executive Frank Brennan has prepared the report after council decided to back away from its previous plans to divert trucks from the town’s main street when the development was challenged in the Supreme Court. Read more

Controversial plans by the Victorian Racing industry to close Casterton’s training facilities could boost the number of thoroughbred trainers at the Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse.
This was the message from Mount Gambier Racing Club manager Ben Faulkner yesterday, following the recent announcement that up to half of Victoria’s training tracks — mostly in small country areas — could close under a major restructure. Read more
Bloodbath at Penola pool

Several children with bleeding and wounded feet climbed out of Penola’s pool on Monday, alarming their parents and Wattle Range Council.
But it is not the first time.
Other children showed scars on their feet from cuts which had bled freely prior to this week. Read more
Bypass talks precede council meeting

An invitation-only meeting between Wattle Range councillors, senior staff, business delegates, residents and affected landowners was held in Penola last Friday to discuss the proposed bypass.

2009 start advised for pulp mill works

Forestry Minister Rory McEwen would grant an extension to approvals for Protavia to build the Penola Pulp Mill if the developer needs more time to secure the $1.5b investment for the region.
Limestone Coast Regional Development Board chief executive Grant King told City Council on Tuesday night Protavia had informed the board works would begin at the site early next year. Read more
