Penola students stage exhibition

An exhibition of work by four Penola High School Year 12 students will open on Sunday.

Bypass decision deferred again

Wattle Range Council’s decision on whether to proceed with acquisition of land to build the Penola bypass has been put on hold until December.

More than 120 people attended a special council meeting at Rymill Hall on Tuesday night to witness council’s discussion on the matter, only to hear the decision would be deferred due to the need for legal advice. Read more

Garden centrepiece unveiled

A giant mother, father and infant sculpted from limestone now gaze over the more than 300 roses planted at the new community garden on Penola’s southern entrance.

Installation of the one tonne sculpture “Love Forgets Not”, which stands more than two metres high, marked a major step forward in the project this week. Read more

Vignerons elect new president

The Coonawarra Vignerons have announced a new leadership team following their recent annual meeting. Michelle Stehbens is the incoming president with Sue Hodder as the vice-president.

Penola bypass concerns raised

Landholders affected by Wattle Range Council’s planned bypasses of Penola and Millicent have been notified they could lose portions of their land under compulsory acquisition moves.

However, the future of the Penola project remains unknown, despite the threat of forced land purchases, as Commonwealth funding has still not been committed for the controversial $17m bypass. Read more

Welcome rain at Coonawarra

Coonawarra has received almost as much rain over the first two weeks of August as was recorded for the entire month last year.

Farmers and viticulturists have welcomed the strong downpours, including 13.6mm on August 1 and 10.4mm on Sunday, after the region entered the month almost 100mm below average rainfall for the first half of the year. Read more

The Menzies Wine Room at Yalumba was filled with song when a busload of Polish pilgrims, led by Father Mietek Markowicz (centre), visited last Wednesday.

Sydney’s World Youth Day event last month has created some spin-offs for the region, with international pilgrims touring the area while in Australia. Read more

Incidents in bluegums escalate

Penola police are concerned about a spate of incidents in bluegum plantations and have called on the public to help catch the culprits.

Penola police Brevet Sergeant Leo Price told The Border Watch there had been shooting and thefts in the plantations regularly since they had been planted, but the incidents had become more frequent this year. Read more

Four illegal workers nabbed in Penola

Four illegal workers located during an immigration operation at Penola will be removed as soon as possible, Immigration Minister Senator Chris Evans said today.

Three of those detained - a woman and two men from Malaysia - no longer had valid visas for Australia while the fourth, from Singapore, had her visa cancelled for working illegally. Read more

Emissions hurdle for Penola pulp mill

Developers of the Penola Pulp Mill have hit a potential new hurdle as they investigate the implications of the Federal Government’s proposed carbon emissions trading scheme.

Protavia communications officer Jason Chappel said he was looking at the implications of emissions trading on the $1.5b development, which was approved last year by state and federal governments. Read more
