Trial aims to improve viticulture process

The South East Natural Resources Management board has funded Precision Agriculture Association (SPAA) to pilot a one year project to increase the adoption of precision viticulture (PV) by grape growers.

The project will involve viticulturalists from the Limestone Coast, growers, consultants and grower liaison officers. Read more

Strong competition drives cattle prices higher

A similar numbered  mixed quality yarding containing 757 young cattle, 591 grown steers, 356 cows and 55 bulls sold to solid trade and processor competition at the Mount Gambier and Disitrict Saleyards on Wednesday.

Feeder and restocker orders were active on small lines of young cattle and cows. Read more

Locust treatment warning

Beekeepers have been urged to move hives from areas where chemical treatment of locusts are planned.

Revegetation effort recognised

UPPER South East farmers Jamie and Josie Jackson have been named the SA Tree Farmers of the Year.
They will be presented with a commemorative plaque at the Australian Forest Growers 2010 conference in Mount Gambier from October 10 to 13 and represent the state in the National Tree Grower of the Year Award competition, with the winner to be announced at The Barn on Tuesday, October 12.  Read more

Wagyu producer takes top food honour

Full blood Wagyu beef from Millicent’s Mayura Station has been awarded a gold medal at the National Produce Awards for the second consecutive year.

The ultra-premium beef produced on some of the Limestone Coast’s richest grazing land was a stand-out entry in the “From the Paddock” category, out-shining some of the country’s best pork, quail, veal, rabbit and lamb. Read more

Agribusiness award entries open

Entries have opened for the 2010 NAB Agribusiness Awards for Excellence, with companies and individuals working in the agribusiness, food, fibre and beverage sectors encouraged to enter.

Ten categories will recognise excellence, innovation and leadership across all areas of agribusiness, including an agribusiness leader of the year award, primary producer of the year award, export award, innovation in new and emerging industries award, technology and innovation award, environment and energy management, rural enterprise award, agribusiness employer of choice award, risk management award and governance award. Youths gain show ring experience

More than 40 youths from the South East, amongst a total of 186 entrants, including 44 from interstate, competed at the annual All Breeds SA Junior Heifer Expo in the July school holidays at the Adelaide showgrounds.

The expo is the largest and most successful event of its kind in Australia. Read more

Grazier reaches out of court settlement

South East grazier Thomas Brinkworth has settled an indemnity claim against the RSPCA out of court following his acquittal of animal cruelty charges after a botched investigation into the mistreatment of livestock.

In a hearing earlier this month, the Adelaide Magistrates Court heard Mr Brinkworth would continue to assert compensation claims “well above” the Magistrates Court scale of costs and what the charity was willing to pay. Read more
