Input invited on Mount Burr forest plan

Forestry SA will soon begin work on a blueprint for the management of plantation and native forest reserves in the Mount Burr district.

The document will detail the strategic management for the area for the next five years and will be titled the “Mount Burr Forest Management Plan”. Read more

Lobster catch the worst in memory

Port MacDonnell veteran fishing leaders have described the opening of the region’s multi-million-dollar lobster industry as the worst in living memory, following catches plummeting to record low levels.

While catches have fallen by more than 40pc, the prices paid to professional fishermen this week have soared to more than $101 per kilogram at some ports. Read more

Woodchip export value grows

The value of Australia’s forest product exports rose significantly in 2007-08, growing by 5pc over the year to reach $2.5 billion, driven by woodchip export growth and to a lesser extent growth in recovered paper exports.

However, many exporters struggled with the high Australian dollar and softening demand for some products, results from ABARE’s Australian Forest and Wood Products Statistics report show. Read more

Biomineral fertiliser plant proposed

A South Australian based organic fertiliser company is seeking interest in forming a farmer-based cooperative to build a $5m manufacturing plant in the Mount Gambier region.

Geomite Pty Ltd chief executive Barry Hayes told The Border Watch the company was exploring setting up a farmer-based cooperative in Mount Gambier because of its proximity to Victoria and expansive farming districts. Read more

Reckless chemical use challenged

Frost and chemicals can both have dire consequences for grapevines, but the big difference is that one of these deadly threats can be avoided…and the other one can’t.

Over the past year, several incidents of spray drift in the Limestone Coast have caused significant crop losses - in one case, an estimated four hectares grapes were affected with a reduction of yield of 3.5 tonnes of grapes per hectare due to irresponsible chemical use, resulting in significant financial losses. Majella Cabernet wins major prize

Majella’s 2006 Cabernet scooped the major prize pool at last night’s 2008 Limestone Coast Wine Show presentation feast at the Naracoorte Town Hall.

After being named ‘Best Red’ and ‘Best Cabernet Sauvignon’, the Coonawarra drop went on to claim the Bill Redman Trophy for ‘Best Wine of Show’, with Majella viticulturalist, Anthony Lynn, receiving the major award for the night - the highly coveted Arthur Hoffman Trophy for Viticulturalist of Best Wine of Show.
