Input invited on Mount Burr forest plan

Forestry SA will soon begin work on a blueprint for the management of plantation and native forest reserves in the Mount Burr district.
The document will detail the strategic management for the area for the next five years and will be titled the “Mount Burr Forest Management Plan”. Read more
Woodchip export value grows

The value of Australia’s forest product exports rose significantly in 2007-08, growing by 5pc over the year to reach $2.5 billion, driven by woodchip export growth and to a lesser extent growth in recovered paper exports.
However, many exporters struggled with the high Australian dollar and softening demand for some products, results from ABARE’s Australian Forest and Wood Products Statistics report show. Read more
Value-adding opportunities exist

A South East timber leader has claimed the possible collapse of the Penola Pulp mill will not be a “disaster” for the region because other companies are already scouting the area for opportunities.
But Green Triangle Regional Plantation Committee executive officer John Kellas claimed it was important the fledgling multi-million-dollar hardwood industry attracted value-adding enterprises for long-term economic and jobs growth. Read more
Financial cloud over Penola Pulp Mill

Financial backers have retreated from plans to arrange funding for the $1.5b Penola Pulp Mill.
ANZ Infrastructure Services (ANZIS) general manager John Clarke yesterday confirmed plans to financially advise on the project were withdrawn “around two months ago”.
“We are still involved in a development sense, but we have resigned our role as the major finance adviser,” Mr Clarke said. Read more
Port and Auspine celebrate milestone

Leading forest products company Auspine and the Port of Portland today marked a significant milestone in their relationship – the export of 10 million tonnes of woodchips.
The milestone was reached on Monday with the loading of the woodchip carrier, MV Global Explorer, at the Port of Portland. Read more
Union calls for national softwood strategy

Carter Holt Harvey has followed its announced closure of the Dartmoor sawmill with news that 29 jobs will be slashed at Myrtleford in north-east Victoria.
Forestry union CFMEU has called on the Federal Government to intervene and develop a comprehensive national plan for the softwood timber industry. Read more
Study reveals mixed views on land use

A new community snapshot into land use across the Green Triangle shows views are up for debate regarding the burgeoning bluegum sector.
While the survey - which covered the South East of South Australia and Western Victoria - showed people’s views on plantations were more diverse and more likely to be negative, Limestone Coast residents were more positive about their impact on the community. Read more

Pest experts visit region

Plantation forestry will be the focus of an Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) tour in the South East today.
