Reckless chemical use challenged

Frost and chemicals can both have dire consequences for grapevines, but the big difference is that one of these deadly threats can be avoided…and the other one can’t.
Over the past year, several incidents of spray drift in the Limestone Coast have caused significant crop losses - in one case, an estimated four hectares grapes were affected with a reduction of yield of 3.5 tonnes of grapes per hectare due to irresponsible chemical use, resulting in significant financial losses. Majella Cabernet wins major prize

Majella’s 2006 Cabernet scooped the major prize pool at last night’s 2008 Limestone Coast Wine Show presentation feast at the Naracoorte Town Hall.
After being named ‘Best Red’ and ‘Best Cabernet Sauvignon’, the Coonawarra drop went on to claim the Bill Redman Trophy for ‘Best Wine of Show’, with Majella viticulturalist, Anthony Lynn, receiving the major award for the night - the highly coveted Arthur Hoffman Trophy for Viticulturalist of Best Wine of Show. Wine show judging about to begin

Almost 500 bottles will be uncorked tomorrow morning when two days of judging for the 2008 Limestone Coast Wine Show gets under way at Coonawarra Hall.
A total of 470 entries from 72 exhibitors representing wineries across the region will be judged by a panel that includes new chairman Huon Hooke and guest international judge Julia Harding MW. Read more

A total of 470 entries have been received for the 2008 Limestone Coast Wine Show from 72 different exhibitors.

Vignerons elect new president

The Coonawarra Vignerons have announced a new leadership team following their recent annual meeting. Michelle Stehbens is the incoming president with Sue Hodder as the vice-president.

Fosters might sell wine business

Speculation is mounting that Fosters will sell parts of its wine business, acquired in 2005 through the takeover of Southcorp.
Fosters owns vineyards in the Coonawarra including Wynns and Penfolds. The company has ceased production of the historic Samuel port label. Read more

Entries can now be posted on-line for the 2008 Limestone Coast Wine Show being held from October 27–31.
Last year, 75pc of registrations were lodged via the internet and it’s hoped that exhibitors will make the most of the facility again this year. Read more
Welcome rain at Coonawarra

Coonawarra has received almost as much rain over the first two weeks of August as was recorded for the entire month last year.
Farmers and viticulturists have welcomed the strong downpours, including 13.6mm on August 1 and 10.4mm on Sunday, after the region entered the month almost 100mm below average rainfall for the first half of the year. Read more
