Basketball dream takes Kate to America

Taking her promising career to the next level, South East superstar basketballer Kate Seebohm has left for the California University of Pennsylvania where she will become one of the school’s division two point guards.

One of seven new recruits to join the Vulcans, Kate, completed Year 12 last year and has been casually working and saving money to fulfil her dream. Read more

Pioneer leaves club with top honour

Andrew Rice will depart from the Castec Rural Mount Gambier Pioneers on a high, named the Allan Scott Medallist at the basketball club’s medal count on Friday night.

Just under 100 guests packed in to the Commodore on the Park function room to witness the count which saw Rice’s dominant season rewarded with the club’s most valuable player award. Read more

RETIRING Pioneer basket-baller Andrew Rice, will carry the weight of favouritism in this Friday’s vote count for the Allan Scott Memorial Best and Fairest Medal.

Russell bows out as Pioneers go down

Kurt Russell’s decorated South East Australian Basketball League career failed to produce a fairytale finish as the Castec Rural Mount Gambier Pioneers went down to competition heavy-weight Bendigo by eight points on Friday night.

An appreciative crowd filled the Icehouse to witness Russell’s final game and were treated to a promising opening quarter from the Pioneers who no doubt wanted to make the night a special one for their friend and teammate. Read more

Pioneers stalwart lines up for final game

The Castec Rural Mount Gambier Pioneers will farewell a club stalwart on Friday night as Kurt Russell plays his final South East Australian Basketball League game, but his absence from the club will be short lived.

The 203 game veteran will take a step back from the sport in 2011 before returning to the Pioneers in 2012 where he will begin his coaching off-court career as an assistant to head coach Andrew Summerville, who will by then be in his third year at the Pioneers. Read more

Junior talent shines through

Programs put in place several years ago to harness junior basketball talent in Mount Gambier is starting to pay dividends with six players involved in the initial stages playing at a national level this weekend.

Now competing at under 16 level, the four girls and two boys will represent Australia at the Junior Basketball National Championships which are being held in brand new facilities in Logan, Queensland. Read more

Pioneers come out strongly

A collective sigh of relief would have left the Castec Rural Mount Gambier Pioneers camp on Friday night after an 11 point win over the Ballarat Miners in round 15 of the South East Australian Basketball League 2010 season.

Having spent the past four weeks enduring loss after loss, the win will give the Pioneers the chance to build its confidence and finish the season strongly despite having little chance of making the playoffs. Read more

Pioneers face tough run to finals

It was always going to be a tough ask for the Castec Rural Mount Gambier Pioneers in the second half of the 2010 South East Australian Basketball League season, but last weekend has really hit home just how hard the run to the playoffs is going to be.

The Pioneers registered its third and fourth consecutive losses over the weekend, going down to Nunawading and Kilsyth in away matches.

Basketball stalwarts honoured

Basketball Mount Gambier awarded three life memberships at its annual meeting last Wednesday night for a trio of loyal servants to the game.
